Some Helpful Resources

Handy Cards for Food-Related Issues
Give the card to your waiter, or the chef, and you need only look at each other to know your message has been understood. These cards address the 40 most common food problems in 15 common languages. Other languages can be special ordered. You don't have to travel for them to be useful, they'll come in handy at local ethnic restaurants too. They are available from www.selectwisely.com .

Cooking Oil Smoke Points
Click here for a great little chart from Spectrum that lists the smoke points of various cooking oils.

Earth Dinner Cards
These cards were created by Organic Valley and Douglas Love to celebrate Earth Day, but are a great idea for a fun dinner party any day. Using these are a fun way to inspire conversation about our food and where it comes from.

Shoppers Guide to Pesticides in Produce
Labeling laws have helped us make better choices about packaged foods by listing things like use of artificial colors, saturated fats and the like but nothing has been done about pesticide residues which are especially of concern with fresh produce. Now there's a little help. The Environmental Working Group has created a downloadable card that you can keep in your wallet or purse that lists the 12 most popular fruits and vegetables that are highest in pesticides and the 12 that are lowest.

Seafood Consumption
On the cautionary side, Oceans Alive has put together a chart on how many servings of various fishes you can safely consume each month. Mercury and PCB contamination rule out many species. Oceans Alive Seafood Consumption Advisories
